Dark Academia vs Gothic, how to tell them apart
Dark Academia is a library: wool, oak, and candlelight. Gothic is the drama after dark: black lace, silver, and a romantic streak.

Moody is not the same as dramatic
Dark Academia is scholarly and vintage: tweed, candlelight, a book with a blank cover because the point is the desk, not the title. Gothic is dark romantic and avant-garde: lace, silver, a shape that knows it is being looked at.
If the picture could be a study, it is Dark Academia. If it could be a stage, it is Gothic.
The palettes do not overlap as much as people think
Dark Academia in the quiz is Espresso, Oak, Parchment, Moss, and Wine. Brown does most of the work. Wine is the accent, not a flood.
Gothic is Void, Violet, Blood, Silver, and Mist. Black is the ground. Silver is the light. Blood is the one warm note, and it should stay rare.
A practical split for clothes
Dark Academia outfits are layers you could wear to a library: a wool coat, a parchment shirt, a wine scarf. Gothic outfits are the evening edit of a similar closet: black lace, a silver earring, a sharper shoe.
Wearing both in one day works if the daytime outfit is Dark Academia and the evening outfit changes the metal and the lace, not the whole look.
When they tie
The quiz treats them as neighbors. A close score is common if you like dark rooms. The either-or question, when it appears, is there to separate a library from a stage.
Pick the room you want to sit in for an hour. That answer is more honest than the outfit you would wear for a photograph.

Questions
Is all black Gothic?
No. A black wool coat in a library is still Dark Academia. Gothic wants lace, silver, and a shape that feels staged.
Can a desk be Gothic?
It can, but the quiz desk is Dark Academia: oak, a candle, a blank book. Gothic lives more easily in a chair, a flower, and metal.
